acts of service

Dear Beloved Sisters in Christ,

We are called to be the light of the world, and one of the most powerful ways we can shine that light is through service to others. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God is prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10.

When we open our hearts to serve, we begin to see others as Christ sees them. Our actions can bring comfort, hope, and healing to those who desperately need it.  Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people. Ephesians 6:7.

Serving allows us to explore our God-given talents and gifts. Each one of us is uniquely equipped to make a difference in the lives of others through teaching, encouraging, hospitality, or volunteering. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10.

Remember that we don't serve for recognition or applause, but because it is a beautiful expression of our devotion to Christ. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.  Philippians 2:3-4.

Christian Values

Why Service to others is important

Acts of service are not just good deeds; they are a fundamental part of your Christian identity. They allow you to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and spread His love to those in need. By serving others, you strengthen your faith, build empathy and compassion, and counter the self-centeredness of the world around you. So, rise to the challenge and make acts of service a regular part of your life, for in doing so, you live out your faith and fulfill your calling as a Christian. Listed below are some examples.

  1. Reflecting Christ's Love: One of the core teachings of Christianity is to love one another as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35). Acts of service are a tangible way to demonstrate this love. When you selflessly serve others, you are imitating Christ's humility and sacrificial love. Your actions become a reflection of your faith, showing the world that you are one of Christ's disciples.
  2. Strengthening Your Faith: Engaging in acts of service not only benefits those you serve but also strengthens your own faith. It deepens your understanding of Christ's teachings and helps you grow spiritually. When you step out of your comfort zone to serve others, you learn valuable lessons about empathy, compassion, and selflessness, which are an important part of your Christian journey.
  3. Building Empathy and Compassion:  It's essential to develop empathy and compassion for others. Acts of service provides you with the opportunity to step into the shoes of those less fortunate and understand their struggles. When you encounter different people and situations through service, your heart opens, and you become a more compassionate person.
  4. Countering Self-Centeredness: In a world that often encourages self-centeredness, acts of service reminds you that life is not just about your own wants and needs. By putting the needs of others first, you break free from selfishness and materialism. You learn to appreciate the blessings you have and share them with those who are less fortunate.
  5. Fostering a Sense of Purpose: Engaging in acts of service gives your life purpose and meaning. It allows you to make a positive impact on your community, school, and the world at large.
